Frugal Living Tip of the Week (Tip #1)

3 years ago after moving into a bigger home we started finding new ways to save money.  Bigger house = bigger mortgage = use needing to find more money or adjust our way of living. I decided to share one tip with you per week or at least try until I run out.

This week’s tip is “pick your city”. Public parks, lane-ways, service areas and so on are just covered with fruit bearing trees if you know where the ones in your area are you can pick the fruit. Yes free fruit all you need to do is go pick it. Another way to go by this is also join Not Far From the Tree an organization that picks trees on private land.

On monday night I brought home a massive bag of crab apples enough to make 2 slow cooker batches of apple sauce. Earlier this year we picked some mulberries, yummy.

  1. There are fruiting chessnut trees on bay street between queen and dundas. But I have no idea when they are ripe but they looked good last time I grabbed one.
